The long hall.
On July 15, 2009, Cullman Regional Medical Center finalized agreements between it and Capella to buy out Woodland Medical Center. According to the Cullman Times, on July 15 the hospital was shut down, and operations were consolidated and moved to Cullman Regional Medical Center. This decision was not based on ghost stories or flickering lights but on financial necessity. The region simply wasn’t big enough to sustain two large hospitals, and consolidation was the only reasonable answer to the dilemma.
The hospital closed its doors, and the staff was shuffled off to Woodland’s sister hospitals in Decatur and Hartselle, where many of the nurses and staff still work today. Although they have moved away from Woodland Medical Center, they haven’t forgotten Homer and eagerly share their stories about their brushes with this phantom.
Those nurses who remained until the very end tell darker stories. After the hospital shut its doors to patients, some of the staff remained to clean out the hospital and take care of paperwork. The electric wiring was taken out of many of the rooms to be used in other facilities. It was during this time that Homer seemed to go crazy. Throughout the hospital, call lights that no longer had electricity went on and off. Room lights flickered, and doors slammed.
Two former employees told me one story that sent chills up my spine. Susan had worked at Woodland for many years and knew Homer well, but she wasn’t prepared for what happened on one of her last nights there. She was gathering paperwork and was walking toward the file room. As she walked toward the door, a sharp chill gripped her, and she shuddered. The door she was walking toward opened and shut suddenly in front of her.
Confused, Susan turned and looked around. She saw one of her friends and co-workers running away from her. When she spoke with her friend later, the other woman described seeing a full-formed phantom man walk through Susan, cross the hall and open and shut the door Susan was heading toward. Susan still shivers when she thinks about it.
